This concert program will span a wide range of orchestrated music. Among the pieces chosen for this concert are “Pomp and Circumstance No. 4” by Edward Elgar, “Themes from Leroy Anderson’s Irish Suite” (adapted by Douglas E. Wagner), “March Slav” by Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky (arranged by Chris M. Bernotas), “A Pirate’s Legend” by Soon Hee Newbold (orchestrated by Carl Rydlund), and “Symphony No. 5, 4th Movement ‘Reformation’” by Felix Mendelssohn (arranged by Sharon Mack).
Berkeley Youth Orchestra is a 70-strong youth symphony orchestra with a 50+ year tradition of nurturing dedicated young musicians who are often in their first full-symphony experience.
BYO musicians ranging in ages 9–19 are led by Artistic Director and Conductor Sam Wilde, and rehearse and perform at the Odell Johnson Performing Arts Center at Laney College on Saturday mornings. Three seasonal concerts feature orchestral repertoire from a variety of genres. Our chamber orchestra program, BYCO, offers further playing experience for advanced members.
BYO is both a welcoming, nurturing community and a professionally-run full symphony orchestra. Our members grow as both musicians and young people, playing challenging repertoire while receiving sectional coaching and earning leadership opportunities. They step into the skills and dedication necessary to create performances that showcase their abilities.
