La Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días es quizás más conocida en el Área de la Bahía por su espectacular templo en la cima de una colina. El Templo de Oakland fue construido en los años sesenta, pero ¿cuándo comenzó la religión?

Para explicar mejor de dónde vino la Iglesia de Jesucristo, es útil tener una comprensión básica de lo que creemos. Todo se basa en el hecho de que Dios es nuestro amoroso Padre Celestial.

¿Quien es Dios?

I know God is real. I know He is aware of you and your situation and wants to help you. He knows your name, speaks your language, hears your prayers, shares your hopes and worries, and most importantly, wants to strengthen His relationship with you. Gaining an understanding that someone so powerful cares about me so personally has changed my life— and my family’s lives—forever.

What is your relationship with God like? Maybe you were once close to Him, but have drifted far away throughout the years. Maybe you’ve never really known who He is and what He means to you. Maybe you simply feel like something is missing in your life that you can’t quite describe. I wish I could get to know you face-to-face and hear your story. No matter where you are spiritually, I know that God loves you and is ready to show you how much He cares. You are His precious son or daughter and He wants to be close to you. So, how do you get closer to Him?

Dios nos habla a través de profetas

A lo largo de la historia, Dios se ha acercado a Sus hijos a través de profetas, hombres inspirados con autoridad para enseñar e interpretar la palabra de Dios.

Puede leer sobre profetas como Abraham, Noé y Moisés en la Santa Biblia. Cada uno de estos hombres fue llamado por Dios para dirigir a su pueblo. Todos ellos enseñan sobre nuestro Padre Celestial y cómo regresar a Él. Todos los que siguieron a estos profetas fueron bendecidos. Desafortunadamente, hubo muchos que no quisieron escucharlos y arrepentirse. Se negaron a creer en Dios y optaron por distanciarse de Él, perdiendo las bendiciones y la protección que Él promete. Se encontraron en un estado de confusión espiritual y oscuridad llamado "apostasía".

En esta vida, es fácil sentirse abrumado, deprimido o confundido por las muchas opciones y pruebas que enfrentamos. A veces nos sentimos culpables por decisiones que ya hemos tomado. También podríamos sentirnos separados de Dios, en una especie de apostasía personal. Afortunadamente, Cristo hizo posible que fuéramos sanados de todas las heridas que llevamos de nuestro pasado y comenzamos de nuevo desde cero.

Jesucristo, el Salvador del mundo

After a long period of disbelief, or “apostasy,” Heavenly Father sent His son, Jesus Christ, to represent Him here on the Earth. During Christ’s life, He was baptized, established His Church by choosing twelve Apostles, served others, performed miracles, and showed us the true path to return to heaven.

Most importantly, Christ suffered and died to give recompense for our mistakes and offenses, giving us an opportunity to repent—which means to change our thoughts and actions to become more like Jesus Christ. That sacrifice is called the Atonement of Jesus Christ. He compensated for our shortcomings. Even the spelling of “Atonement” suggests that we can be “at one” with Heavenly Father. Thanks to Jesus Christ, all of us can repent and become at one with God again. We can be freed from the guilt, sadness, and pains of the past. That’s why Jesus Christ is the Savior—He lovingly provided a way for you and me to be salvado.

Cuando elegimos ajustar nuestro estilo de vida como Él nos pide, somos bendecidos en todos los aspectos de nuestra vida. Se nos promete que siempre que nos arrepintamos sinceramente, seremos perdonados.

Estoy lejos de ser perfecto. Me arrepiento todos los días, esforzándome por acabar con los malos hábitos y empezar con buenos. Es un proceso de mejora satisfactorio y alegre. Incluso cuando me equivoco, sé que puedo intentarlo de nuevo.

La gran apostasía

Sadly, just like before, many people rejected Christ as the Son of God. After His death, they killed many of His followers. Over time, the authority to lead God’s Church was lost from the Earth entirely. Lots of different opinions got mixed in with the true teachings of Jesus regarding crucial topics such as His sacrifice, baptism, Church organization, and prayer. Thousands of churches were formed, each with its own perspective on God. The centuries afterward are known as the Great Apostasy because the complete truth didn’t exist anywhere on Earth.

Durante esos siglos de confusión, mucha gente buena buscaba estar cerca de Dios pero no sabían cómo. Muchos registros de las Escrituras se cambiaron o se perdieron gradualmente. Con el tiempo, a fin de aclarar Sus enseñanzas y ayudar a Sus hijos a progresar, Dios proporcionó más luz y comprensión a través de un profeta moderno.

La Restauración de la Iglesia de Cristo

As said in the beginning, God loves us. He wants each of us to know how to come back home to Him. As a loving Father, He would not let His children be confused forever. After many years, a young man named Joseph Smith prayed for truth and wisdom, and God answered his prayer. Through Joseph Smith, God restored His one true Church and later called Joseph to be His prophet.

José Smith vivió en Nueva York en el año 1820. Estudió muchas religiones, pero estaba confundido por las discrepancias entre sus enseñanzas. Dos predicadores podrían leer el mismo pasaje de la Biblia y sacar conclusiones opuestas acerca de lo que Dios pide a la humanidad. ¿Cómo podrían ambos tener razón? ¿Qué versión le permitiría volver a vivir con Dios?

Joseph luchó con estas y otras preguntas, preocupado por lo que sucedería después de esta vida. Quería estar seguro de que estaba viviendo de la manera que Dios quería, no solo siguiendo lo que alguien más quería. Un día, leyó un versículo de la Biblia con una promesa increíble:

"Si alguno de vosotros tiene falta de sabiduría, pídala a Dios ... y le será dada" (Santiago 1: 5, Versión King James de la Biblia)

José Smith decidió hacer precisamente eso. Fue a un lugar privado, se arrodilló y oró al Padre Celestial, preguntando a qué iglesia debía unirse. Debido a que oró con humildad y fe, recibió una respuesta extraordinaria. Describe la experiencia con sus propias palabras:

“Vi una columna de luz exactamente sobre mi cabeza, por encima del brillo del sol, que descendió gradualmente hasta caer sobre mí ... God and Jesus Christ visited him in person and told him that none of the churches in that time had the complete truth. The religious leaders of the day didn’t have the authority to direct God’s Church, baptize, or interpret the scriptures. They called Joseph Smith as a prophet to restaurar the true Church of Jesus Christ—the same one that He established while He was here. They authorized him to baptize people, call twelve Apostles, and translate God’s word found in the Book of Mormon.

¿Cuál es la diferencia entre reformar y restaurar?

To reform means to modify an existing organization. To restore means to reestablish the original exactly as it was before. God has restored His Church—the same one that Christ set up—on Earth once again.

El Libro de Mormón: otro testamento de Jesucristo

can be saved through Him. The Bible tells of God’s dealings with people in the Eastern hemisphere, and the Book of Mormon tells of God’s dealings with people in the ancient Americas. It doesn’t replace or contradict the Bible in any way—in fact, the Book of Mormon supports and clarifies the Bible’s teachings, and encourages all to read it. The Book of Mormon was translated by Joseph Smith from the original record, written thousands of years ago, and preserved until now.

My favorite part is towards the end (page 427), when Jesus Christ visits the people of the Americas after His resurrection. Just like He did in Jerusalem, He taught, healed, and prayed with the people. He knew their names. He listened to their heartaches and invited them to be baptized. I know Christ does the same for me. He loves todos, sin importar quiénes son, dónde viven o cuándo nacieron.

El Libro de Mormón ha cambiado mi vida. Cuando lo leo, me llena de alegría y consuelo. Sé que es verdad. Al estudiarlo y aplicar sus enseñanzas, me he acercado más a Cristo que nunca antes en mi vida. Me ha ayudado a superar los momentos más difíciles. You don’t have to wonder if this is God’s only true Church, or if the Book of Mormon is true. You don’t have to wonder what God expects of you. You can know for certain that He loves you and all of His children.

En el Libro de Mormón, un antiguo profeta estadounidense llamado Moroni nos invita a descubrirlo por nosotros mismos. Él dice:

“Cuando recibáis estas cosas, quisiera exhortar [invitación] usted que le pediría a Dios, el

Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost. And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things” (Moroni 10:4-5, Book of Mormon page 529).

Ore al Padre Celestial, preguntándole sinceramente si lo que he hablado es verdad. Te prometo que si estás dispuesto a escuchar, Él te hablará. Él te responderá por el poder del Espíritu Santo. Preste atención a sus pensamientos y sentimientos. Escuche su voz. Sé que sentirás Su amor.
